Combined screening
.

First trimester

Weeks : 11.3 to 13.6

  • Free hCG
  • PAPP-A
  • Ultrasound
    (nuchal translucency)
  • Detects only chromosomal
    abnormalities;
  • Result are available early
  • Justified is chorionic villous
    sampling was available

Serum screening
.

Second trimester

Weeks : 15 to 20.6

  • Free hCG
  • InhibineA
  • Estrion
  • Alpha-fetoprotein
  • Detects chromosomal
    abnormalities and neural
    tube defects
  • Result are available later
  • Accuracy comparable to the combined first trimester
screening. This test is ideal if
    ultrasound expertise is not
    available.

Integrated screening
.

It currently offers the best detection rate with the
fewest unnecessary amniocentesis

This test combines Nuchaltransluency, the first trimester markers as well as the second trimester markers. It is performed in two stages.

First trimester - Weeks : 11.3 to 13.6

  • This test detects chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects.

Second trimester  - Weeks : 15 to 20.6

  • This test detects chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects.

Risk of foetal loss with amniocentesis approximately 1 over 150
